Jost Bürgi (also Joost, Jobst; Latinized surname Burgius or Byrgius; 28 February 1552 – 31 January 1632), active primarily at the courts in Kassel and Prague, was a Swiss clockmaker, a maker of astronomical instruments and a mathematician.

Joost Bürgi was a mathematician who invented logarithms independently of the Scottish mathematician John Napier. Bürgi served as court watchmaker to Duke Wilhelm IV of Hesse-Kassel from 1579 to 1592 and worked in the royal observatory at Kassel, where he developed geometrical and astronomical.

Bürgi was born 28 February 1552, in Lichtensteig in the Toggenburg , a 70 km long alpine highland valley along the Thur River and southwest of Mount Säntis in the Canton of St. Gallen, Switzerland .
