Girl Rising launched as a nonprofit after witnessing the power of storytelling to catalyze change. The stories of nine ordinary, extraordinary girls in the original Girl Rising film help spark a global movement for girls’ education. Today, storytelling remains at the heart of our education programs and Future Rising.
The movie tells the stories of nine girls from nine countries: (Sierra Leone, Haiti, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Peru, Egypt, Nepal, India and Cambodia). Each girl had her story written by a writer from her country and voiced by renowned actors. Their stories reflect their struggles to overcome societal or cultural barriers.
Directed by Academy Award Nominee, Richard E. Robbins, produced by Martha Adams, written by acclaimed female writers, and voiced by celebrated actresses including Meryl Streep, Kerry Washington, Anne Hathaway and more, Girl Rising helped fuel a global movement for girls’ education.
